Split-Level Transformation

Pittsburgh, PA
Concept Design

A cramped mid-century split-level home gets a modern renovation, transforming it into a unique family oasis.

A mid-century split-level home, nestled on a private, wooded property in a desirable neighborhood, needed a major upgrade to accommodate a growing family with teenage children, work-at-home parents, and a collection of pets. The compact home lacked a primary suite and had a cramped, outdated kitchen.

This design concept envisions a modern two-story addition that transforms the house to fit the family’s needs. On the first floor, the kitchen is opened up to the dining room, creating a spacious, open-concept space that’s ideal for entertaining. A large set of glass doors fill the space with natural light, and create an indoor-outdoor living experience that extends to the pergola-covered garden and pool deck. This allows the family to be together without feeling cramped.

On the second floor, the parents now have a private retreat, including a luxurious primary bedroom, spa-like bathroom, and lofted office space. A private balcony gives them the opportunity to soak in the views of the sunset while keeping an eye on the kids.
